How can Hypnotherapy/NLP help you ?
We are in some ways similar to computers in that we have programs that our minds have created for during our lifetime to deal with everything that life throws up. We don’t usually realise that we are running these programs and think that we are experiencing things objectively as they actually are.
For instance if as a child you saw your parent pick up a spider and show it to you as something interesting and fun your mind will create a program to reflect that. Alternatively if your parent freaked out in front of you at the sight of one, your mind would have created a fear of spiders program. When as an adult you see a spider your program will run and you will see the spider as either an ok or frightening thing automatically. We don’t see the spider and think “That’s a spider they are scary”, we automatically apply the program and instantly and the spider itself seems intrinsically scary.
These programs affect everything in our lives not just phobias. Every decision we make is influenced by them and all together they make up who we are.
These ‘programs’ we have could also be called trances because they are bits of automatic behaviour that we run without realising.
When these trances are unhelpful it is not that easy to change them because from an evolutionary point of view they keep us safe so we shouldn’t need to change them.
Fortunately with Hypnosis/NLP and other techniques it is possible to change them to something more useful, but often messing them up is the best way. When the trance has been messed up the mind is forced to create a new blank one and re-evaluate the situation. When this happens you get what is often described as a ‘shift’ as suddenly you see things totally differently. I have experienced this several times and it is a strange feeling as you can’t understand why you felt like you did.
